Why it should be a body oil sometimes...

The cosmetics market with plant-based oils for body and facial care is currently booming. But why and when does it make sense to use skin oil as an alternative to cream? In this article, we would like to give you an overview of the benefits of skin oils.

Vegetable oils are particularly kind to the skin

Vegetable oils are very well absorbed by the skin and can penetrate deeper into the skin layers than synthetic mixtures. This is because vegetable oils harmonise with the structures of the skin, as they both have a very similar lipid composition. Skin can be better protected and regenerated by moisturising with plant oils. The oils are best absorbed into the skin when applied to damp skin directly after showering or bathing. Alternatively, you can massage the oil into your skin with damp hands. If you have very dry skin and existing creams are not helping, you should try a skin oil. Every oil contains vitamin E, which helps to strengthen the skin's protective barrier. This means that moisture is better retained in the skin in the long term and it feels smooth and supple.

Antioxidant properties

Many vegetable oils are rich in antioxidants and bioactive ingredients. They offer the skin protection against free radicals. This makes them hard-working helpers in the fight against skin ageing. Oils with these properties include pomegranate seed oil and grape seed oil, which are also contained in some Dresdner Essenz skincare products.

Care and cleansing

Skin oils have both nourishing and cleansing properties. For example, vegetable oils can be used to remove make-up. However, you should make sure that the oils are suitable for the face and do not sting the eyes. This could be the case, for example, if the oil contains essential oils or is strongly perfumed. Pure coconut oil, for example, is ideal for removing make-up. Stressed skin in particular benefits from this gentle cleansing method, which also provides valuable care.

No or fewer additives are necessary

Preservatives are always necessary when water is contained in a cosmetic product. A cream is a mixture of water and oil that has to be preserved using preservatives in order to curb the growth of bacteria. Emulsifiers help the mixture to achieve a pleasant consistency. These substances are not necessary for a moisturising oil. People with very sensitive skin in particular benefit from a reduced composition of care products that contain fewer additives.

Vegetable oils for skin care

Unlike creams, which are a mixture of oil and water, skin oils do not contain any water. This makes them a concentrated skin care product. The skin care character of a skin oil is determined by its composition. Vegetable oils have different proportions of unsaturated fatty acids such as linolenic acid, palmitic acid or stearic acid. For skin care oils, it makes sense to combine vegetable oils that complement each other in their fatty acid spectrum.

Jojoba oil:

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub. It is particularly suitable for the care of sensitive skin because it helps to strengthen the skin barrier and binds moisture.

Pomegranate seed oil:

The golden yellow oil is obtained from the dried seeds of the pomegranate. It is primarily used as an anti-ageing ingredient in cosmetics, as the high proportion of punicic acid in combination with other bioactive ingredients gives the oil its antioxidant properties.

Grape seed oil:

Grape seed oil is obtained from the seeds of grapes. Due to the complex production process, it is one of the most expensive skincare oils. It is rich in vitamin E and linoleic acid, which help to protect the membrane. As a rather light vegetable oil, it is suitable for the care of dry, oily and combination skin. It refines and smoothes the skin texture.

Almond oil:

The oil is extracted from the kernels of the almond tree and is particularly kind to the skin. It helps to soothe stressed skin. The palmitic acid it contains strengthens the skin's natural protective acid mantle, making it more resistant in the long term.
