Say goodbye to stress

I feel stressed. Who hasn't heard this sentence before or said it themselves - stress is something of a widespread disease today. Stress is actually a very useful invention of nature. In ancient times, if there was a rustling in the bushes, it meant danger for cavemen. They had to be wide awake in an instant - blood pressure, pulse and breathing rate would shoot up. Today, it is no longer a hostile animal that lies in wait for us, but the demands of work and everyday life. Deadline pressure, responsibility, noise and sensory overload bring the body to a permanent stress level. Nervousness, stomach problems, tension, back pain and sleep disorders are the result - the original protective mechanism of stress becomes a burden. But you can actively combat this. Have a wellness day every now and then, consciously take time for yourself and do something for your body and soul.

1. Sleep in

This is less about sleeping as long as possible and more about waking up calmly and stress-free. We often get far too little sleep and if we have a lot on our plate, the quality of our sleep also suffers. So sleeping in is pure luxury for our bodies.

2. Drinking tea

There is something cosy about drinking a cup of tea first thing in the morning and it is ideal for a relaxed start to the day. The soothing warmth, inspiring aromas and stimulating colours create a feeling of security. The type of tea is of secondary importance, it's more about the how.

3. Warm bath

A warm and aromatic bath with natural essential oils is a pampering programme for all the senses. A full bath conveys harmony, warmth and cosiness and helps you to unwind. The spectrum of effects of essential oils ranges from refreshing and stimulating to relaxing, balancing and mood-enhancing.

4. Face mask

While you relax in the bath, you can use the time to apply a nourishing face mask. The warmth of the bath opens the pores and the skin absorbs moisturising substances from the mask particularly well.

5. Take a deep breath

It sounds strange, but many of us have forgotten how to breathe properly. Just watch a small child: when it breathes, its stomach rises and falls. In adults, however, it is the chest and shoulders that move. This chest breathing is much shallower than abdominal breathing, as the lungs have less room to expand. In stressful situations with accelerated breathing, we deprive our body of important oxygen - creating new stress. You can counteract this with simple breathing exercises. Take a quarter of an hour at least three times a week to do the following exercise: lie comfortably on your back, bend your knee slightly and breathe in deeply through your nose. Make sure that you breathe in through your stomach. Breathe out slowly through your nose and say a two-syllable word such as "silence" or "calm" in your mind.

6. Enjoy nature

A walk in nature works wonders. Exercise in the fresh air is many times more relaxing than a day on the couch, because our muscles are made to move. Standing still means stress. Relaxed running, swimming or cycling helps our body to release the accumulated stress energy much better. Metabolism and blood circulation are accelerated, happiness hormones are released - and you keep fit at the same time. Daylight also lifts your mood.

7. Laughter

Laughter is probably the best way to reduce stress. When we laugh or smile, the body releases the happiness hormone serotonin.

8. Massage

Enjoy the wonderfully pampering touch of a massage and breathe in the wonderful fragrance of the massage oil. A massage stimulates blood circulation in the skin, calms the breath and relaxes the muscles.

9. Cook something delicious

We often just eat quickly on the side without really savouring the moment. Take the time to cook and prepare a fresh meal. Working in the kitchen can have a very relaxing effect, the motto here is: Mindfulness. Take a fresh look at familiar actions and create a new experience. And don't forget: Enjoy the meal afterwards to the full, preferably with family or good friends.

10. Autogenic training

Autogenic training is a scientifically recognised relaxation method and is based on autosuggestion. By repeating formulas such as "my legs are getting heavy" or "my body is warmly flooded" several times, deep relaxation can be achieved even with little practice. This measurably calms your autonomic nervous system and improves your blood circulation and ability to concentrate. However, this technique is best learnt under supervision!

11. Goodbye smartphone

We are permanently reachable and always informed about everything. This state of affairs is both a curse and a blessing. Because always being on call triggers subliminal stress in us. Try switching off your smartphone for a day and forgetting everything around you.
