Excursus: Japanese bathing culture

Just relax, take a bubble bath and forget the world around you. In Europe, we bathe primarily to cleanse ourselves or to create small wellness oases in our everyday lives. In other parts of the world, bathing is firmly anchored in the culture and is traditionally celebrated. This is the case in Japan, for example, which has developed an interesting bathing culture over the centuries.

Japan: tradition meets modernity

Japan is an island in the Pacific and its capital Tokyo is known as a trendy metropolis. It is colourful, lively and extravagant: billboards light up everywhere, many looks are unusual and characterised by garish colours. At the same time, the Japanese are very tradition-conscious. Their daily life consists of many small rituals and the observance of etiquette.

The tradition of hot water

The bathing ritual in Japan is intended to "cleanse" both body and soul in equal measure. It is celebrated as a tradition accordingly. Before entering the bathtub, the body must be thoroughly cleansed in order to keep the bath water, which is usually used by several people, clean. Purity is an important and firmly anchored part of Japanese culture. Washing yourself in the bath first would be a "no go".
The Japanese are characterised by very warm bath water, both in winter and summer. Water temperatures exceed the 40°C mark and even the most experienced Japanese can only last a few minutes in some pools. The heat is perceived as particularly beneficial for the body and can relieve stubborn tension. This aspect is comparable to the sauna in northern Europe. The preceding cleansing under the shower or with the help of a bowl sometimes has the purpose of acclimatising the body to the warm water temperatures.
The Japanese bathing ritual is based on the four principles: wa-kei-sei-jaku: harmony, reverence, purity and silence.

Countless bathing options

Private bathing at home is called "ofuro". Family members usually bathe together or at least use the same bath water, which often remains in the bath for several days and is kept warm with a bath lid.

The public bath is generally referred to as a "Sentō", while the hot spring bath has its own name, "Onsen". Japan is located in a volcanically active region, so many hot springs can be used for the bathing ritual. Many of the public baths are idyllically embedded in nature. The Japanese are aesthetes and love natural materials and an appealing ambience. Swimwear is permitted in very few facilities because it could contaminate the water.

Japanese feeling at home

We Europeans are not used to such hot baths and should not choose such a high water temperature so as not to burn ourselves or put too much strain on our circulation. Using bath water several times would certainly be good for our water costs and water consumption, but a lid would be necessary to maintain the water temperature and a cleansing ritual would be required beforehand.

In Japan, great importance is attached to natural ingredients. Milky baths and ingredients such as green tea, matcha tea, rice germ oil or rice flour and protein, bamboo, lotus or ginkgo are popular. Cherry blossom is the symbol of spring in Japan and is celebrated with the traditional hanami. During this time, people meet up with friends and family for a picnic in the parks to enjoy the beauty of nature. It is not for nothing that hanami translates as "looking at blossoms". The cherry blossom symbolises beauty and transience in Japanese culture.
