Forest bathing - the new health trend

Depression, burnout and sleep disorders are now becoming real widespread illnesses. The world is spinning faster and faster - many people find it difficult to simply take a break. Yet many of us have the solution to our problems right on our doorstep. The forest has numerous positive effects on our health, but a visit to the forest must be approached correctly - in the form of a forest bath.

What does forest bathing mean?

Originating in Japan, forest bathing is known as shinrin yoku and means something like "immersing yourself in the forest atmosphere". And that's what you literally do with this mindfulness exercise: forest bathing is about coming down, switching off and experiencing nature with all your senses. This includes, for example, taking in the lush greenery, breathing deeply and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. In Japan, forest bathing has now become a recognised stress management method that is promoted by the health authorities. Studies have shown that consciously slowing down lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system and reduces stress. What's more, you can also sleep better after forest bathing.¹ Japanese studies have also shown that forest bathing protects against cancer because the number of killer cells in the blood increases.²

There is no pressure when forest bathing. You don't have to achieve a specific goal or push yourself to the limit. That is not the purpose of the exercise. It's all about calmness, awareness and breathing. Be in the here and now, don't think - experience!

By the way: mobile phones are absolutely taboo during forest bathing - think of forest bathing as a digital detox.

Why is forest bathing so good for you?

Apart from the relaxation and exercise in the fresh air, colour psychology also plays a role in the positive effect of forest bathing. The green colour of the trees has a fresh and harmonious effect at the same time, grounding you.

The trees and plants in the forest also have a direct effect. Among other things, this is due to messenger substances produced by trees - so-called terpenes. Terpenes actually serve to protect the tree, for example from pest infestation. Terpenes are the main components of essential oils. When forest bathing, you inhale terpenes and absorb them through the mucous membranes in your respiratory tract. In the body, they have an effect on your immune system.
