West Indian Sandalwood
The evergreen balsam tree, scientifically named Amyris balsamifera, thrives in the tropical climes of Central and South America. Its delicate white flowers are characteristic of it. Only after 30 years does this tree reach maturity to produce the precious essential oil with its unique, warm-woody aroma - a scent that is often said to have an aphrodisiac attraction.
The essential oil is known as West Indian sandalwood oil or amyris oil. It is extracted from the bark and wood of the balsam tree and has a soothing effect of relaxation and calming.
